چکیده

We developed a full non-local model to nematic elastomers in terms of the displacement and the tensor order parameter. We consider both elastic and nematic contributions. This model allows spatial variation of the order parameter field. We also get the dynamics equation using variation principle applied the Lagrangian and the Rayleigh dissipation function. By using small approximation, we get some results and compare with the literature. If we consider the scalar order parameter fixed, we recover the usual Ericksen-Leslie theory with the viscous term including the elastic contribution.

Modelling elasticity and memory effects in liquid crystalline elastomers by molecular dynamics simulations

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid crystal elastomer of side-chain architecture. The network is formed from a melt of 28 molecules each having a backbone of 100 hydrocarbon monomers, to which 50 side chains are attached in a syndiotactic way. Crosslinking is performed in the smectic A phase. We observe an increase of the smectic–isotropic phase transition temperature of abo...

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers as Artificial Muscles

We find that low molecular weight liquid crystalline cooperative effects acting over length scales larger than the typical mesh size of a liquid single crystalline elastomer {LSCE), controls the elastomer shape. This result provides a “proof of concept” for the novel suggestion of de Gennes et al. that LSCEs may be used as temperature activated artificial muscles.

Isotropic-nematic transition in liquid-crystalline elastomers: lattice model with quenched disorder.

When liquid-crystalline elastomers pass through the isotropic-nematic transition, the orientational order parameter and the elastic strain vary rapidly but smoothly, without the expected first-order discontinuity. This broadening of the phase transition is an important issue for applications of liquid-crystalline elastomers as actuators or artificial muscles. To understand this behavior, we dev...

Nonlinear relative rotations in liquid crystalline elastomers.

Relative rotations between the coupled subsystems of a complex material can become crucial in continuum modeling. In this paper the authors focus on the macroscopic description of side-chain liquid crystalline elastomers, where relative rotations between the polymer network and the director orientation associated with the liquid crystalline component are decisive. They extend the known expressi...

Opto-mechanical effect in photoactive nematic side-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers.

The mechanical behaviour of monodomain nematic side-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers containing azoderivatives as pendant groups or crosslinkers has been studied under UV irradiation and in the darkness at different temperatures. From the evaluation of the opto-mechanical experiments, the mechanical efficiency, kinetic rates, activation energies and the isomerization mechanism of the azocomp...
